[DDI-users] Recommended use of TopcClas in DDI-C 2.1

Hi Wendy and Julian

We are resurrecting a discussion we had in September 2019 about usage of the TopcClas DDI attribute. The Dataverse community is currently working towards implementation of controlled vocab servers for lookup from certain DDI fields.

Have there been any further discussions about how we can persist with the historic use of the attribute vocabURI, when now with LD vocab servers we also want to provide a PURL to point to the term/concept?

As Julian pointed out at the time "how would other systems know when the vocabURI attribute points to the vocab and when it points to the vocab term?"

I thought it would be more efficient to ask if there has been any more consideration of this issue.

Thanks
Janet

Good point, particularly the fact of DataVerse use. I think adding a specific URI in addition to the vocabURI would be the most appropriate. Thanks Julian!

Hi everyone,

Would a concern here be that repositories are already using that attribute to point to the vocab URL itself, and using it for the PURL of the vocab term would mean that it would then be used to store two types of information? I know Dataverse is using it for the vocab URL. How would other systems know when the vocabURI attribute points to the vocab and when it points to the vocab term?

Would an additional, optional attribute for the vocab term URI be possible?

All best,
Julian
