From: The DDI Usability and Outreach Working Group
Subject: DDI Tools, User Aids, FAQs
Friends,
Whether you use DDI already or are thinking about using it in the
future, this message is for you.
If you have...
- questions about how to use DDI or where to start;
- roadblocks you've encountered to using DDI;
- identified (commercial or non-commercial) tools that help you;
- presentations, papers, articles, that you have written yourself
or know about that you have found helpful in understanding or using
DDI;
- tools that you have developed locally to create, transform, or use
DDI;
Please send them or information about them to me!
I'm writing for the DDI Usability and Outreach Working Group which is
one of the working groups of the DDI Alliance.
http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/DDI/org/
We've identified as our first item of business to do an inventory of user
aids that already exist and of problems, questions, and needs that
have already been identified.
We hope our work will expand on work already done at ICPSR, e.g.,
http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/DDI/users/index.html
You can help by sending me whatever information you can (citations,
URLs, full text, scripts, programs, etc.).
Here are some more examples of what we're looking for:
1) Formal presentations, papers, power-points, handouts, bibliographies,
web pages, glossaries, etc. that you have created or know about.
(ICPSR has already listed a number of items here:
http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/DDI/papers/index.html )
2) Questions for FAQ. Do you have questions about what DDI is, or how
to use or implement DDI? These might be very specific ("Which
field do I use for x?") or very general. Please share with us
the kinds of questions that you have been asked and that you
think would be useful for incorporating into a "Frequently Asked
Questions" web site. ICPSR's FAQ:
http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/DDI/codebook/faq.html
3) We'd like to inventory software tools that you already use when
working with DDI or tools that you wish you had. Please emphasize
DDI-specific tools, but also include generic tools that you
have found useful when working with, converting, or creating DDI
(e.g., XML editors, perl modules, java libraries). ICPSR's page of
tools: http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/DDI/users/tools.html
4) Projects that use DDI. Do you have anything to add to the list
ICPSR has compiled
http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/DDI/codebook/projects.html ?
5) If you have any other suggestions that do not fit in the above
areas, please feel free to add them!
Please don't hesitate to send anything that might help! That question
that you might think is 'too obvious,' that perl script you wrote that
you thought was a one-time throw-away script, that commercial software
that you think everyone knows about... Send it all. We would much
rather sift through duplicates than miss a gem!
Thank you in advance for your time in helping with this! If you have
any questions, or would rather talk or fax, please do not hesitate
to get in touch with me.
Thanks again!
jim jacobs
