Debut of new workshop that introduces experiments in social science
*Introduction to Experiments in Social Science Research*
*Dates:* August 9-13, 2021
*Instructor: *Allyson Holbrook, University of Illinois at Chicago
*Registration Deadline:* August 6
This workshop introduces students to the logic of experiments conducted in
social science disciplines, including different types of experimental
designs, the importance of random assignment, and experiments and validity.
Students will be introduced to laboratory experiments, field experiments,
and experiments implemented in surveys. If time permits, the workshop will
finish with brief discussions of some debates in the application of
experiments, including bias against the null hypothesis in the design and
conduct of experiments, the use of balance tests to establish the success
of random assignment, and concerns about strategies like p-hacking,
HARKing, and the replication crisis in some social science disciplines
(along with the increased popularity of experiment preregistration and
other steps taken to address these concerns). The format of the workshop
will be a combination of short lectures, class discussions, and small group
activities designed to allow students to apply their knowledge to specific
research situations.
*Bio: *Professor Holbrook's research is in two areas. She studies how
people's attitudes and beliefs are formed and change over time, and how
these beliefs influence behavior, particularly in the realm of political
issues and activism. She also studies how respondents to surveys think
about and respond to the request to be surveyed and specific survey
questions. Her teaching is primarily in the areas of research methods,
particularly how to design and conduct survey research.
