Though our offices are mostly empty as a result of the ongoing pandemic,
mulled apple cider, the chill in the air, and the brilliant colors of fall
remind us that autumn is here, and it is time for ICPSR’s fall edition of
*DataBytes*!
Relive the 2020 ICPSR Data Fair!

Over 2,254 attendees from 66 countries filled 4,204 virtual seats across 28
webinar sessions September 21-25, to explore, “Data in Real Life.” The
online sessions cover timely 2020 research topics associated with US
elections, race, the Census, higher education, immigration, COVID-19, and
so much more. The session list
<https://www.icpsr.umich.edu/web/pages/membership/datafair/2020/schedule.html>
with descriptions are available on the ICPSR website, and all are invited
to relive the ICPSR Data Fair
<https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLqC9lrhW1VvYJIhgtk9QlAYxLSwbF7Bf2>
via recordings found on ICPSR’s YouTube channel.
2021 Summer Program – Another Virtual Summer Ahead

The ICPSR Summer Program has decided its 2021 mode of instruction will be
online. This decision was made with consideration of the current public
health information about the COVID-19 pandemic. While the program will
return to in-person instruction in 2022, this summer you can garner
quantitative skills wherever Wi-Fi is available! Visit the ICPSR Summer
Program website <https://www.icpsr.umich.edu/icpsrweb/sumprog/> for the
latest details!
Where will you be next fall? The 2021 ICPSR Meeting, of course!

Save the date for the 2021 Biennial ICPSR Meeting running October 6-8.
Workshops, sessions, and networking are in planning. Decisions on virtual
versus in-person are coming in January, and registration will be available
this spring. New to the meeting? Visit the 2019 ICPSR Meeting

session descriptions and recordings.
A Bounty of Student Opportunity!

ICPSR invites submissions for the ICPSR 2021 Research Paper Competitions
<https://www.icpsr.umich.edu/web/pages/ICPSR/prize/index.html> for
undergraduates and master’s students. The competitions award first place *cash
prizes of $1,000*! Deadline for entry: January 31, 2021.
ICPSR Membership Invoices and Gratitude

Invoices for the membership period beginning July 1, 2020, were mailed in
April and were due on August 30. We know this is a tough budget environment
for all of our members as it is for the Consortium itself. Thanks to our
members who have found creative ways to pay their membership fees. Missing
your invoice? Please contact us
<https://www.icpsr.umich.edu/web/pages/about/contact.html>.
A Cornucopia of Diverse New Projects and Partners!

ICPSR is pleased to announce several new projects. The Data Archive for
Interdisciplinary Research on Learning (DAIRL
<https://www.icpsr.umich.edu/web/pages/DAIRL/index.html>), a project of Mindset
Scholars Network <https://mindsetscholarsnetwork.org/>, is designed to
provide a public infrastructure for scholars to share data and apply an
interdisciplinary lens to research that shapes student learning inside and
outside of formal educational settings. In addition, ICPSR has been
selected by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI
<https://www.pcori.org/>) to build a new repository that will make
available the data from a range of the clinical research studies it funds.
And we just launched the PEERS Data Hub
<https://www.icpsr.umich.edu/web/pages/peersdatahub/>, a research data hub
and collaborative space for diverse STEM education research communities to
build and advance knowledge through sharing innovative ideas, methods, and
tools - supported by the National Science Foundation and the American
Educational Research Association (AERA
<https://www.icpsr.umich.edu/web/pages/AERA/index.html>).
Giving Thanks for the Launch of the ICPSR Student Sandbox!

ICPSR is a leader in data-sharing efforts within the social sciences, and
students are generating and analyzing more data than ever before as part of
class projects, honor’s theses, and research papers. Put those two factors
together, and you get the ICPSR Student Data Sandbox
<https://www.openicpsr.org/openicpsr/studentdata;jsessionid=94CC3166E4D3FFB923A4EF2713F24A3B>!
The Sandbox is a place for students and classes from ICPSR member
institutions
<https://www.icpsr.umich.edu/web/membership/administration/institutions> to
self-publish data they generate and/or use. Students will learn not just
about the act of sharing data, but the importance of metadata, persistent
identifiers, and more!
Extending the Gift of Webinars this Season!

We have two webinars coming in early December! During the Data Fair, we had
the opportunity to learn how recently-released data on immigration arrived
to ICPSR. On December 2, we will enjoy A Data Orientation to Immigrants
Admitted to the United States, Federal Fiscal Years 1972-2000
<https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_lXPRZNENSSCtRqbuR7ZZ6w>!
Principal Investigator Sherrie Kossoudji will describe these data
<https://www.icpsr.umich.edu/web/ICPSR/studies/37688>, which include every
single person admitted as an immigrant 1972-2000, and give insights into
the types of analyses that might be undertaken. Then on December 3, Dr.
Lynette Hoelter, Director of Instructional Resources at ICPSR, will provide
an orientation to the ICPSR Student Data Sandbox
<https://umich.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_7g8jzixDRWChor4Yf7ulUQ>,
including general instructions for student deposits and how to incorporate
use of the sandbox in instruction for courses like research methods or
marketing research techniques. Register now!
Celebrating 20 Years of Data-related Literature!

The ICPSR Bibliography
<https://www.icpsr.umich.edu/web/pages/ICPSR/citations/> is a searchable
database of known published and unpublished works resulting from analyses
of data distributed in ICPSR studies. Freely available and continually
updated, the database currently contains over 94,025 citations. We
encourage you to go discover data via the literature!
Plentiful Data in your Field? Let Us Help You Share It!

ICPSR welcomes and encourages deposits of digital data and offers a number
of data-sharing options that meet agency, foundation, and institutional
requirements for both public- and restricted-use data. Start sharing data
<https://www.icpsr.umich.edu/web/pages/deposit/index.html> today! Know of
data that need to be shared? Please suggest data that ICPSR should archive
<https://www.icpsr.umich.edu/web/pages/deposit/suggest.html>.
