*Visualization, process tracing, and visualization*
Three short workshops, three days each. In addition to our popular Process
Tracing workshop, we have two different visualization options using R, one
focusing on ggplot2 and static images, the other using Shiny to make
interactive graphics. And if those terms went just a little over your head,
we totally get it, and we made a number of Introduction to R courses to
help out! See our full course schedule

for
those, but for now we would like to feature these short workshops:

Interactive Visualization, Dashboard, and Apps with R and Shiny

(May
27-29)
*Instructor: David Armstrong, Western University*

Despite the availability of technologies that make web-based, interactive
data visualization and analytics possible, most of us continue to persist
in a static web-based environment. R, through its Shiny platform, offers
countless opportunities to deploy interactive dashboards, web applications
and APIs without the added overhead of having to code things from scratch
in javascript.

This course is ideal for instructors who want to bring more interactivity
to their classroom examples. It is also well-suited for researchers who
want to disseminate web-based interactive graphics and analytics to their
readers. Finally, this would be a good introduction for staff from
organizations who want to deliver visualizations and analytics to clients
and stakeholders who may not have the capability to generate the results
themselves.

Process Tracing in Qualitative and Mixed Methods Research

(May
27-29)
*Instructors: Derek Beach, Aarhus Universitet*

Process tracing is a research method designed to learn how things work in
real-world cases. Increasingly used across the social sciences and in
applied policy evaluation, process tracing involves unpacking a causal
process in a case and tracing how it worked empirically, enabling strong
within-case inferences about causal processes.

The aim of this intensive three-day course is to provide participants with
a good working understanding of the core elements of process tracing as a
distinct social science case study method, enabling you to utilize it in
your own research either as a stand-alone method or in combination with
other methods in multi-method designs such as experiments or small/medium-n
comparisons using Qualitative Comparative Analysis. The course will combine
lectures and discussions with group work on exercises and individual work
using your own research.

Social Science Data and Model Visualization in R

(May
27-29)
*Instructor: Boris Shor, University of Houston*

This course will introduce social science students to modern methods of
exploring and communicating data to a variety of audiences. The primary
tools will be the R statistical programming language, RStudio as a
development environment, and the tidyverse family of R packages (especially
ggplot2) for visualization. The object will be to enable students to feel
confident in descriptively exploring their data, communicating that to
scholarly and outside audiences, and communicating inferential results for
presentation and paper writing purposes. Throughout, good workflow
practices for scientific writing will be emphasized.
