ICPSR's Winter Byte

While the mild temperatures here in Ann Arbor have confused our seasonal
signs, the calendar confirms it is time for ICPSR's winter edition of
DataBytes!

The 2016 Summer Program is Heating Up!

Registration for the 2016 Summer Program
<http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/sumprog/> will open at noon EST on February 8.
The four-week courses run June 20-July 15 and July 18-August 12. And,
numerous three- to five-day workshops beginning in May are also in the mix!
Looking Back at a Year of Collaboration

ICPSR's 2014-2015 annual report
<http://issuu.com/icpsr/docs/annual-report-finalsinglepages/1> is now
available. The report documents a year in which ICPSR added new archives,
saw membership continue to grow, and collaborated globally and across
academic disciplines to support curation and preservation of scientific
data.

PATH Study Now Available via ICPSR's National Addiction & HIV Data Archive
Program (NAHDAP)

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) announce the availability of questionnaire data from
the first wave of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH)
Study. Hosted by NAHDAP <http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/NAHDAP/>, the PATH Study
<http://doi.org/10.3886/ICPSR36231.v2> is a household-based, nationally
representative, longitudinal cohort study of 45,971 youth (12-17 years) and
adults in the United States.
Heat up Your Winter Syllabus: Throw in some Data in the Classroom!

ICPSR's Teaching & Learning resources
<http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/icpsrweb/instructors/> are full of standardized
exercises to introduce data analysis within your substantive introductory
courses, whether you want to change things up for a day or a week. Check
out our Data-Driven Learning Guides
<http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/icpsrweb/instructors/biblio/resources> where
analyses are preset so students (and faculty!) can focus on content rather
than mechanics of data analysis.

An Updated Collection Development Policy for ICPSR

ICPSR recently published a new policy outlining the characteristics of data
that ICPSR has interest in adding to its expansive collection of data in
the social and behavioral sciences. See our seven High-Priory Data areas
<http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/icpsrweb/ICPSR/support/announcements/2015/09/icpsr-updates-collection-development>
and read the full policy
<http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/icpsrweb/content/datamanagement/policies/colldev.html>
.

New ICPSR Council Members Arrive in March

ICPSR will welcome the ICPSR Council
<http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/icpsrweb/content/membership/governance/council.html>
to its next meeting, March 3-4, with six new colleagues. After a robust
nomination period, the membership approved the new Council members this
past December. Arriving with thick binders in hand will be new members:

Northwestern University; Jane Fry, Data Centre, MacOdrum Library, Carleton
University, Ottawa, ON; Michael Jones-Correa, Political Science, Cornell;
Verna Keith, Race & Ethnics Studies Institute, Texas A&M; Robert Stine,
Statistics, Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. Welcome to ICPSR
Council!

A Fond Farewell to Mary Vardigan

It is with heartfelt congratulations that ICPSR announces that Mary
Vardigan, Assistant Director of ICPSR, retired this past December. Mary has
had a significant hand in shaping the organization for 30 years. In
addition to serving as ICPSR editor and directing ICPSR's Collection
Delivery Unit, Mary also has served as Director of the Data Documentation
Initiative (DDI), and is involved in other international projects related
to data stewardship, including the Data Seal of Approval, the Research Data
Alliance, and various efforts to promote data citation. Missing Mary
already? Visit ICPSR's YouTube channel
<https://www.youtube.com/user/ICPSRWeb> where Mary talks about the evolution
of the delivery of research data
<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vo8OtTufRKE&feature=youtu.be> to the web
environment.
