Subject: [DDI-SRG] Status Update on the DDI-CDI Specification

Dear All:

In early 2020, we released the Public Review draft of the DDI Cross-Domain Integration specification (DDI-CDI). We had planned for a production version of the specification in the first quarter of 2021. In light of recent developments - both good and bad - we have had to revise this schedule.

We had anticipated having a face-to-face sprint in the Fall of 2020, at Schloss Dagstuhl. Due to COVID-related travel restrictions, this event was cancelled. These sprints have always been extremely productive in the past, and missing this one is responsible in part for the current delays.

On a more positive note, we have been conducting a series of webinars with the support of CODATA to encourage review of the DDI-CDI draft specification, both within and outside of the traditional DDI community of users. Thus far, several webinars and follow-up workshops have been held, including hundreds of participants. Topics were organized around communities of users (i.e., CESSDA, official statistics, FAIR implementers), specific functionality (i.e., data description, units of measure, process/provenance), and out-reach to particular domains (i.e., crystallography, infectious disease). This activity has produced a lot of valuable input, and has lead to some discussions which are on-going, and will not only feed into the revision of the current specification, but also produce potential additional functionality for future revisions.

Other events have also produced valuable input to the specification. In December of 2020, the European DDI User's Conference included tutorials and presentations of DDI-CDI, including discussion of how the specifications will be implemented and used. The week-long International FAIR Convergence Symposium also included presentation and discussion of DDI-CDI in several different sessions. Both events provided useful feedback.

Another activity is currently underway through the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC), exploring how DDI-CDI could be implemented within that infrastructure to help solve problems around data discovery and reuse across scientific domains. One part of the project report will include feedback to the DDI Alliance regarding how CDI can be optimized for that environment.

Although incorporation of comments from the public review are now underway, the outreach activities will continue. Given the importance of the feedback coming from these activities, the DDI-CDI development team (MRT) decided that it was best to extend the review period in order to maximize the resulting benefit.

Currently, delivery of a finalized first version of the DDI-CDI specification to the DDI Technical Committee is slated for June 2021. At this point, plans are to incorporate corrections and adjustments to the current functionality supported by the specification, but will avoid expansion of the overall feature set. At that point, the Technical Committee will determine if further public review is needed, or whether the specification is in a form which can be submitted for approval and publication.
