Dear DDI Community,
Development of the new model-based DDI 4 specification, which continues the
DDI Lifecycle branch, is proceeding apace. At the sprint held the week
before the North American DDI Users Conference in Vancouver in March,
sprint participants agreed on a new approach to the architecture for DDI 4.
This new approach involves a library of objects and functional views on the
library that conform to common user needs, such as a simple codebook or
metadata needed for discovery. This flexible approach will permit users to
interact with the specification to capture just the pieces they need.
The Moving Forward Project, as this DDI 4 work is called, is fortunate to
have Thérèse Lalor from the Australian Bureau of Statistics serving as
project manager. Thérèse organized and oversaw the sprint week in Vancouver
and now has assembled the outcomes on a new DDI wiki at
http://www1.unece.org/stat/platform/display/DDI4/DDI+Home. This site, which
is provided to the DDI Alliance courtesy of the UNECE, can serve as a
central hub to share documents related to DDI 4 development and to
communicate new information. To upload documents to the site, contact
Thérèse (therese.lalor at abs.gov.au) to organize access.
A summary of the work progressed at the Sprint can be found at
http://www1.unece.org/stat/platform/display/DDI4/NADDI+Sprint. We direct
your attention especially to the paper describing the outcomes of the
sprint, which is available at
http://www1.unece.org/stat/platform/display/DDI4/Structure+of+DDI+4. As you
will note at the end of the paper, we request your feedback about the
recommendations outlined in the paper. Please also contact us about the
progress to date and any other issues about DDI 4 and its development that
you would like to raise.
Thank you for your continued interest and participation in DDI and its
activities.
Mary and Thérèse
