Warm apple cider, a crisp chill in the air of Ann Arbor, and brilliant
colors of fall ablaze - it must be autumn at ICPSR and time for our fall
edition of *DataBytes*!
The 2018 ICPSR Data Fair in Review!

Over 386 attendees from 243 institutions joined us for 26 webinar sessions
October 1-5, to explore, "Data: Powered by You." The online sessions
covered data activism, data transparency, data sharing ethics, new ICPSR
projects, and member services, to name a few. Did you miss it? Recordings
and presentation slides may be found on ICPSR's YouTube Channel
<https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLqC9lrhW1VvYev_Pq-NkLZT327l87zkUo>
as well as on the ICPSR website
<https://www.icpsr.umich.edu/icpsrweb/content/membership/datafair/>.
Save the Date - 2019 Summer Program

The ICPSR Summer Program is excited to announce its four-week session dates
with the first session beginning June 24, 2019. More information, including
workshop announcements, will become available soon. Visit the ICPSR Summer
Program website <https://www.icpsr.umich.edu/icpsrweb/sumprog/> for the
latest details!
Where will you be next fall? The 2019 ICPSR Meeting, of course!

Save the date for the 2019 Biennial ICPSR Meeting running October 16-18.
Workshops, sessions, and catering are in planning. More information and
registration will be available this spring. New to the meeting? Visit the 2017
ICPSR Meeting
<https://www.icpsr.umich.edu/icpsrweb/content/membership/or/ormeet/attend-virtually.html>
session descriptions and recordings.
ICPSR 101: Why Should I Cite Data?

The latest addition to the ICPSR 101 video series, "Why should I cite data?
debuted earlier this fall. The production is already being used in training
sessions and classrooms across the globe. Go check out the video, which is
less than three minutes, and the other ICPSR 101
<https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLqC9lrhW1VvZo0M_DE5PrKm2jgmXn_7OY>
videos, too.
A Bounty of Student Opportunity!

ICPSR invites submissions for the ICPSR 2019 Research Paper Competitions
<http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/icpsrweb/content/ICPSR/prize/index.html> for
undergraduates and master's students. The competitions award first place cash
prizes of $1,000! And, the Research Library of the Federal Reserve Board
(an ICPSR member!) is offering a paid summer internship for graduate level
library or information science students. See the FRB job board
<https://www.federalreserve.gov/start-job-search.htm> and use job code
21140.
Are You Among the 85 Percent?

Invoices for the membership period beginning July 1, 2018, were mailed in
April and were due on August 30. Thanks to the 85 percent of members who
have already paid. Missing your invoice? Please contact us
<https://www.icpsr.umich.edu/icpsrweb/content/about/contact.html> and help
reduce the significant consortium resources typically dedicated to
collecting unpaid membership fees!
A Badge of Transparent Honor!

A group of University of Michigan researchers is helping to build a system
that uses visible tokens, or "badges," to help safeguard the integrity and
provenance of research data and the conclusions drawn from them. "Open
Badge Researcher Credentials for Secure Access to Restricted and Sensitive
Data <https://www.icpsr.umich.edu/icpsrweb/about/news/1183>," funded by the
National Science Foundation, has three main objectives: Develop an open
badge system for managing researcher credentials; articulate levels of data
sensitivity and risk that indicate criteria for access; identify the right
balance between openness and privacy for data users in a restricted data
access system.
Increasing Transparency and Accessibility in Education Research

ICPSR, in partnership with SREE (Society for Research on Educational
Effectiveness), is thrilled to share with you that the Registry of Efficacy
and Effectiveness (REES) <https://www.sreereg.org/>, a new tool for
improving transparency and accessibility of education research, has
recently launched. Developed with support from the Institute of Education
of Sciences, REES is a repository of information documenting the original
design parameters for all causal inference studies in education and related
social science fields. REES is designed to make it easy to enter study
design information for a range of study designs, including randomized
controlled trials, matched comparison group designs, regression
discontinuity designs, and single case designs.
Giving Thanks for Great Council Members and ORs!

Congratulations to ICPSR Council
<https://www.icpsr.umich.edu/icpsrweb/content/about/governance/council.html>
member Jane Fry, who was honored in April with a Professional Achievement
Award
<https://carleton.ca/provost/teaching-achievement-award/celebrating-excellence-2018-achievement-award-winners/>.
Fry is the Data Services Librarian at Carleton University
<https://carleton.ca/> (Ottawa, ON). And, she is the ICPSR Official
Representative at Carleton!
Tales from the Data Enclave

ICPSR offers researchers access to highly sensitive data via its Physical
Data Enclave - a secure data environment located at ICPSR's offices in Ann
Arbor, Michigan. Accessing these data can be difficult for researchers
residing far away from Ann Arbor. However, for those able to make the trip,
these data provide an opportunity to make unique contributions to
scientific knowledge. In July 2018, Dr. H. Daniel Butler, an Assistant
Professor of Criminal Justice at Sam Houston State University, traveled to
Ann Arbor to analyze data from data series commissioned by the Bureau of
Justice Statistics. Read about his experience in Tales from the Data Enclave
<https://www.icpsr.umich.edu/icpsrweb/about/news/1123>.
A Cornucopia of Data? Share It!

ICPSR welcomes and encourages deposits of digital data and offers a number
of data sharing options that meet agency, foundation, and institutional
requirements for both public- and restricted-use data. Start sharing data
<http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/icpsrweb/deposit/index.jsp> today! Know of data
that need to be shared? Please suggest data that ICPSR should archive
<http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/icpsrweb/deposit/suggest.jsp>.
