*Data User Workshop: Pittsburgh Youth Study and Northwestern Juvenile
Project*

*Dates and Time:* July 17-21, 2017, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
*Location:* Ann Arbor, Michigan
*Instructors:* Karen Abram (Northwestern University), Jessica Jakubowski
(Northwestern University), and Dustin Pardini (Arizona State University)

This five-day workshop is sponsored by the National Archive of Criminal
Justice Data <http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/icpsrweb/NACJD/>, with support
from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP),
Office of Justice Programs, U.S. Department of Justice. The goal is to
orient participants to the content and structure of two landmark
longitudinal studies which followed at-risk youth and youth involved in the
juvenile justice system through adolescence into early adulthood.
Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the following
datasets:

   - Northwestern Juvenile Project (NJP)
   <http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/icpsrweb/NACJD/series/607>, a longitudinal
study of the alcohol, drug, and mental health service needs and outcomes of
   juvenile detainees
   - Pittsburgh Youth Study (PYS)
   <http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/icpsrweb/NACJD/series/566>, a longitudinal
study of the etiology of delinquency, substance use, and physical and
mental health problems from childhood to early adulthood.

These datasets are accessible only through the Virtual Data Enclave (VDE)
operated by the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social
Research (ICPSR).

The workshop consists of in-class lectures, software demonstrations, and
data analysis exercises using the VDE. Participants will learn about each
dataset including core research questions, study design, and the specific
strengths and limitations of each dataset. Participants who complete the
training will have working knowledge of how to utilize the VDE to continue
to pursue secondary analysis of the featured datasets.

*Target audience:* While applications from advanced graduate students and
senior scholars will be considered, the primary target audience for the
workshop is junior (tenure-track) professors or post-doctoral students.
Applications are encouraged from emerging scholars interested in using the
PYS and NJP data to pursue high-quality research with the strong potential
to inform effective prevention of crime and delinquency.

*Prerequisites:* Participants must have strong skills in one or more of the
following software packages: SPSS, Stata or SAS. In addition, participants
should have some prior experience analyzing complex survey data.

*Application:* Admission is competitive and limited to selected applicants.
All applications must include a CV and a cover letter describing:

   1. Topics and research questions the applicant intends to pursue with
   PYS and/or NJP data;
   2. Prior record of accomplishment in the field of juvenile delinquency,
   antisocial behavior, developmental criminology and related literatures;
   3. Experience analyzing data from large and complex survey datasets
(including specific datasets and types of analyses conducted). Please
indicate which statistical package you prefer to use during the workshop.

*Fee and stipends:* The workshop is free. A limited number of stipends to
support the cost of travel and housing will be offered.

*Deadline: May 26, 2017 at 12PM ET*
