ICPSR's Winter Byte
What a winter it has been! With record-breaking low temperatures, endless
snowfall, and lots of progress to share, it's time for our winter edition
of DataBytes !
Temperature Rising for 2014 Summer Program!
Registration is open for the 2014 Summer Program! The four-week courses run
June 23-July 18 and July 21-August 15. Several three- to five-day workshops
beginning in May also are in development. Sign up to receive email
notifications regarding workshop additions and/or watch for announcements
on our social media pages!
A Look Back at a Year of Innovation
ICPSR's 2012-2013 annual report (PDF) is now available. The report
documents an inventive and productive year in which membership grew to 724,
an increase of 19 percent over the prior year, and the ICPSR Summer Program
achieved record enrollment.
Looking Ahead, Strategically
ICPSR's new Strategic Plan is now available online. This Plan is the result
of approximately a year of effort to develop a multiyear vision. It sets
priorities for the organization to maintain our leadership position in data
curation and stewardship and to promote social and behavioral research.
New ICPSR Council Members to be Seated in March
ICPSR is pleased to welcome six new members to its Governing Council and to
announce the appointment of Council member Christopher Achen to a two-year
term as Council Chair. The new members are Janet Box-Steffensmeier, Ohio
State University; Robert Chen, Center for International Earth Science
Information Network; Philip Jefferson, Swarthmore College; Chandra Muller,
University of Texas at Austin; Ronald Nakao, Stanford University; and
William Vega, University of Southern California.
Insights on Research, Direct from the Researcher
The Resource Center for Minority Data (RCMD) at ICPSR is pleased to make
available a new article based on an in-depth interview with Ruben G.
Rumbaut, professor of sociology at University of California, Irvine, and a
Principal Investigator of the Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Study
(CILS). Rumbaut explains how the CILS began and comments on its objectives
and major findings--providing useful advice for other researchers who are
attempting to analyze the data.
Using ICPSR Data to Teach about Love and Attraction
Just in time for Valentine's Day, ICPSR's Resources for Instructors
announced the release of a new Data-Driven Learning Guide, "Is Love Really
Blind?" DDLGs are designed by teaching faculty to help build data literacy
in undergraduate classrooms.
openICPSR--a Soft Launch for the Membership!
openICPSR launched in beta form for use by the membership on February 24,
2014. Individuals from member institutions may use the self-deposit option
for free during the beta period that runs through June 30, 2014. openICPSR
is a research data-sharing service for the social and behavioral sciences.
It allows the public to access research data at no charge (or in the case
of restricted-use data, at nominal charge). Individuals at member
institutions should contact their Official Representative to obtain the
promotion code for free self-deposit.
A Search for Sustainability--Domain Repositories
More than two dozen data repositories serving the social, natural, and
physical sciences have released a white paper recommending new approaches
to fund the sharing and preserving of scientific data. "Sustaining Domain
Repositories for Digital Data: A White Paper" (PDF), emphasizes the need
for sustainable funding of domain repositories--data archives with ties to
specific scientific communities.
Call for Student Research Papers on Data Curation
ICPSR invites original student submissions for a research paper competition
on the topic of data curation. This competition, awarding $1,000 to the
first-place paper, has the purpose of encouraging and highlighting
exemplary student research on data curation, including, but not limited to,
such topics as data management planning, supporting the data curation
lifecycle, metadata, data confidentiality, preservation, and cost modeling.
Deadline for submission is May 30, 2014.
A Free Workshop for Consumer Expenditure Survey Users
The Consumer Expenditure Survey(CE) is excited to announce that
registration for the ninth annual Microdata Users' Workshop July 16-18,
2014 in Washington DC is now open! The free workshop provides a unique
opportunity for CE data users to receive hands-on training and access to CE
microdata experts.
