ICPSR's Summer Byte

It's been a cool summer and a busy one in the halls of ICPSR! It's time to
take a moment to share archive updates in this summer edition of DataBytes .

2014 ICPSR Data Fair: "ICPSR - Powering Sustainable Data Access"

The 2014 ICPSR Data Fair will feature approximately 14 webinars across four
days, October 6-9. The fair will feature several of ICPSR's public access
archives that are sustained by federal and foundation funding, our newest
public access collection called openICPSR, efforts to share restricted-use
data with the public, and sustainable training on using data in the
classroom! The Data Fair is free and open to the public. Registration links
to the webcasts are expected to be available in mid-September.

New Summer Program Director Announced

ICPSR is pleased to announce that Saundra Schneider will join ICPSR as the
next Director of the Summer Program in Quantitative Methods of Social
Research starting in August 2014. Schneider succeeds Interim Director John
Garcia, who has served in that position since January 2014. Schneider is a
long-time Summer Program instructor and has been teaching Regression
Analysis I, one of the mainstay courses in the Program, since 1990. She is
Professor of Political Science at Michigan State University.

OR Tools: Updated Campus Workshop Presentation!

ICPSR has updated its presentation workshop. It's effectively four
presentations in one, enabling ORs to cater to audiences who are new to
ICPSR, desiring to better understand how to find data, looking for training
or instructional (teaching) resources on data and quantitative methods, or
needing data management plan assistance (for grant proposals) to share
research data. Feel free to copy/paste any of the slides into your training
decks or use the presentation in its entirety! You can download the deck
from ICPSR's slideshare account or from the member website (see workshop
materials table). Note that this presentation will be presented as part of
the 2014 Data Fair in October.

Cool Data Released this Summer: NAHDAP Releases Data on Drug Use Among
Young American Indians

NAHDAP announces the release of the data collection, "Drug Use Among Young
American Indians: Epidemiology and Prediction, 2001-2006 and 2009-2013."
This study, funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, is relatively
unique in that American Indians are its primary respondents. The study's
purpose was to assess the levels and patterns of substance use among
American Indian youth who attend school near or on reservations in the
United States.

Summertime Deposits Heat Up in openICPSR

Launched just last February, deposits of data into openICPSR (ICPSR's
public access data collection) have heated up! Within just six months,
approximately 30 projects have been published with more in progress.
openICPSR extended its beta period through the end of 2014 and continues to
accept self-deposits from individuals at member institutions without charge.

openICPSR for Institutions and Journals

ICPSR has spent many of the dog days of summer developing openICPSR for
Institutions and Journals. This is a research data-sharing service
developed specifically to meet the needs of universities, journals,
research centers, and departments that desire a fully-hosted, economical,
professionally-run, and trusted research data repository without the costs
of technical staffing or IT hardware. More information will be coming soon
on this service planned for launch in 2015.

Bright Researchers Win ICPSR Research Paper Competitions!

ICPSR is pleased to announce the first-place winners of the 2014 ICPSR
Research Paper Competitions: Lorraine Blatt, Grinnell College,
Undergraduate Competition; Peter Lista, Indiana University - Bloomington,
Master's Competition; Jian, Central University of Finance and Economics
(Beijing, China), Resource Center for Minority Data Paper Competition; and
Tiffany Chao, University of Illinois, Data Curation Competition. The
submissions to this year's competitions demonstrated a high degree of
scholarship and creative ways of analyzing data. It's not too early to
start researching and writing for the 2015 competitions!
