https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/844163186 The increase of
suicides in the military, high profile suicides, and mass shootings have
heighted public awareness regarding these violent acts and led to increases
in funding to understand the correlates. While prevalence rates for many
diseases have shown declines in the last 20 years, rates of suicide have
remained steady overall and increased for certain sub-groups. Moreover,
there were 9 mass shootings, defined by the FBI as 4 or more dead, in the
U.S. in 2012, with many other additional shootings with multiple but fewer
than 4 deaths. Many times, mass shootings end with the suicide of the
perpetrators (e.g., in 7 of the 9 mass shootings in 2012). While it may
seem that high profile incidents indicate a more serious problem than
actually exists, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS),
multiple-victim homicides have gradually increased, from 3.1% of murders in
1976 to 4.4% in 2005 (up 42%), while multiple perpetrator homicides have
increased from 11.5% in 1976 to 20.3% in 2005 (up 75%). Further, since the
mid-1990’s, mass shootings (greater than 3 deaths) have risen, but without
clear linearity, while the overall murder rate in the U.S. has fallen.
Attend this Webinar to learn about ICPSR data that can help answer current
and emerging questions regarding suicide, suicide risk, mass shootings, and
their correlates.
Those interested in attending will include researchers concerned with
finding and analyzing secondary data on suicide and life-threatening
behavior (LTB) for various populations (youth, military members), as well
as those tasked with providing assistance or referral information for these
resources. Anyone interested in depositing data related to suicide and LTB
with ICPSR will also want to join the Webinar.
