ICPSR's Summer Byte

It has been a hot summer in Ann Arbor and in the halls of ICPSR! With over
20 days exceeding 90 degrees and with the energy of launching a refreshed
Web site, ICPSR is excited to take a refreshing moment to share archive
updates in the summer edition of DataBytes.

ICPSR Looks a Little Different

ICPSR has returned from summer vacation with a new look. With a better
searching apparatus, still more metadata, and a variables comparison tool,
the site is reinvigorated and ready to take on the new academic term.
Explore the details of our site redesign or better yet, go out and
experience the refreshed www.icpsr.umich.edu for yourself!

Looking for Election Data? How about an Orientation to ICPSR? Check out our
2012 Data Fair!

You're invited to participate in the ICPSR 2012 Data Fair, "Analyzing
Election Data with ICPSR"! Scheduled for October 1-3, the series of
webcasts will focus on election data held in ICPSR's archives, and how to
use them for analysis and teaching. Day one of the data fair will provide
an orientation to ICPSR data, data evaluation tools, and teaching
resources, while day two and three will focus on all things election.
Registration is open and can be found by visiting the ICPSR 2012 Data Fair
Web site.

Webinars are Coming - Get Your Invitations Directly!

ICPSR has over two dozen webinars in the works for broadcast from September
2012 through May 2013. Content for these broadcasts will cover everything
from introductions to ICPSR and its special collections and specific
datasets, to bringing data into the classroom, to increasing your
effectiveness in finding and evaluation data for use, to issues of data
management, data deposit, and disclosure risk. The series launches with a
webinar titled: "Introduction to The National Archive of Computerized Data
on Aging (NACDA)" on September 18, 2012. To receive invitations to future
ICPSR webinars directly, join ICPSR's email list.

Welcome Back Students - It's Time to Start Planning for 2013!

ICPSR invites submissions for our ICPSR 2013 Research Paper Competition
from undergraduates and master's students at member institutions. We are
holding three competitions - with three first place cash prizes of $1,000
each! And there is more: The ICPSR summer internship program provides
undergraduate students with a unique and expansive research experience that
introduces all aspects of social science research via a paid internship on
the campus of The University of Michigan. See recent ICPSR interns exhibit
their research on ICPSR's YouTube Channel.

New Data Tool Alert: "Compare Variables" Tool

The Social Science Variables Database (SSVD) enables ICPSR users to examine
and compare variables and questions across studies or series. The
new "Compare Variables" tool enables analysts to compare response codes,
frequencies, and question text (when available). Students can also
visualize the evolution of variables, for example, by looking at the
differences in response codes of a question on marital status asked in 2008
compared to one asked from 1974-1976.
