Springing into our 50th Year!

Spring has sprung with a golden hue in the hallways of ICPSR. Open the window and take a moment as we share a fresh bit about our 50th celebratory events and look forward to the next 50 years.



Reflecting on 50 Years of Data Management

On Thursday, June 7, 2012, former and current ICPSR faculty and staff gathered with the UM community and invited guests to celebrate ICPSR's 50th Anniversary. More than 120 people attended the celebratory banquet at the Michigan League with still more gathering at the headquarters of ICPSR for a reception and tours of our home, the historical Perry Building just off the University of Michigan campus. Friends and colleagues reunited to share memories of the launch of (formerly) ICPR and marvel at the growth of the Consortium. ICPSR wishes to express its gratitude for those that attended any of our events in person or in spirit!

Interns - The Foundation for the Next 50 Years

ICPSR is pleased to welcome the intern class of 2012! After reviewing more than 250 applications, ICPSR selected six interns who will reside in Ann Arbor for 10 weeks, attend the Summer Program, and complete a research project. Incoming interns are: Jeffrey Berg of Carleton College; Joshua Goode of the University of Colorado-Denver and Red Rocks Community College; Thomas Hegland of St. Olaf College; Jane Oliphant of the University of Portland; Rosa Rincon of California State University-Northridge and Pasadena City College; and Tori Thomas of Georgia State University. Budding Researchers Win ICPSR Research Paper Competitions!

ICPSR is pleased to announce the first-place winners of the 2012 ICPSR Research Paper Competitions: Quentin Karpilow of Kenyon College, Undergraduate Competition; Zornitsa Kalibatseva of Michigan State University, Master's Competition; and Amanda Mireles of Princeton University, Resource Center for Minority Data Paper Competition. It's not too early to start researching for the 2013 competitions!

OR Toolbox - On-demand Utilization Reports

Need to understand your institution's utilization of ICPSR resources? Need a report produced for a meeting that starts in 10 minutes? All ORs and DRs have access to on-demand utilization reports -- one of many tools found on the Official Representatives Tools Web page.  Click on the "Utilization reports" link, authenticate using your MyData, Google, or Facebook accounts, run your reports, and go armed with usage data with several minutes to spare!

Planning a workshop about ICPSR on your campus but not sure where to start? ICPSR has posted its workshop presentation and other promotional materials, all available for download or order. Customizable promotional posters and email/newsletter content are also available. In addition, you can find our presentations for download on slideshare.net.

Council News - Membership Fees for 2014 Held Constant

During the March 2012 Council meeting, members voted to keep FY2014 membership fees at FY2013 levels. The fee schedule is found on the ICPSR Web site. Please note that FY2013 invoices were issued in May and are due by August 31, 2012. Please contact ICPSR if you need an electronic copy of your invoice.

Mark your Calendar - The 2012 ICPSR Data Fair

ICPSR will hold its second annual data fair October 1 - 3, 2012. Coinciding with the 2012 presidential election, the data fair will feature election studies distributed by ICPSR, where to find the most current election data, highlights of election-oriented projects conducted at the Institute for Social Research, voting behavior data focusing on minority populations, and teaching resources to bring election data into the classroom. Interested in participating or have ideas? Planning has begun, so contact ICPSR now!

A Sneak Peek at the Future!

Come September, ICPSR's Web site will sport a new look, easier navigation, and upgraded searching tools. Look for opportunities to beta test the new site in July!
