ICPSR's Autumn Byte

The trees are sporting their brilliant fall colors, the apple cider is flowing, and the Official Representatives are arriving to Ann Arbor. It must be autumn at ICPSR and time for our fall edition of DataBytes!

A Familiar Leader for ICPSR

George Alter, acting director of ICPSR since November 2009, has accepted the position of Director for a five-year term starting this September. His appointment as Director marks an important milestone in ICPSR's development, and will help the consortium take advantage of new research and preservation opportunities over the next several years. Read more about George in an insightful interview from the ISR Sampler.

The ORs are Coming - On Campus and Virtually!

This year's conference theme is "ICPSR: Building on 50 Years of Leadership," and over 165 ORs, DRs, and guests are scheduled to attend the October 5-7, 2011 meeting. Unable to make the trip to Ann Arbor? Many sessions will be streamed live. See the schedule of live broadcasts on our Web site.

Congratulations to our 2011 Miller and Flanigan Award Winners

ICPSR is pleased to announce the 2011 recipients of the Warren E. Miller Award for Meritorious Service to the Social Sciences and the William H. Flanigan Award for Distinguished Service as an ICPSR Official Representative. Tom Smith, senior fellow and director at the National Opinion Research Center, and Kevin Schürer, professor at the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom, have won the Miller award. Paula Lackie, academic computing coordinator for the social sciences at Carleton College, and Laine Ruus, retired head of library services at the University of Toronto, have won the Flanigan Award. The awards will be presented at the biennial meeting of ICPSR Official Representatives on October 6, 2011.

Discount Offers for ICPSR Members from Sociometrics

Sociometrics has just updated the SSEDL Web site. It has a vibrant new look and an easier to use search system, including searches for studies and variables by keyword. Users can also visualize the richness of an archive by viewing a matrix of variables by variable topic and type, with links to each variable's metadata. And notably, Sociometrics is offering subscription discounts to ICPSR members.

Council News - 2013 Fees Reminder

To assist members in planning ahead for budgets, after six years of frozen membership rates, in June 2010, Council approved a 5% increase in membership fees across all categories for FY2013 (beginning July 1, 2012). Developing country rates will remain unchanged.

OR Toolbox: Campus Workshops to Increase Usage of ICPSR Resources

Want to conduct a workshop on ICPSR resources but don't know where to start? ICPSR has posted workshop materials including a presentation template, printable posters and email/newsletter text to announce your workshop. You can also request that ICPSR conduct a virtual workshop for your campus! And tune into Promoting ICPSR -- Engaging Your Campus with Data Thursday, October 6, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. EDT for still more helpful hints for promoting usage of ICPSR resources.

Student Research Opportunities - Deadlines on the Horizon

ICPSR is sponsoring three research paper competitions for undergraduate and master's level students. The awards are $1,000 for first place and $750 for second place in each category, and the deadline for submission is January 31, 2012. In addition, ICPSR continues its highly competitive undergraduate internship program. Materials are due no later than February 13, 2012. Please share these opportunities with your campus communities!

Reflecting on 50 Years of Data Management

ICPSR officially kicks off its celebration of its 50th year at the meeting of Official Representatives this October. ICPSR will host a number of receptions around the country, on-campus events, and culminating events on June 7, 2012. See our dedicated anniversary Web site for a list of events, historical perspectives, and to share your memories of ICPSR.

Save the Dates!

ICPSR will mark its 50th year on June 7, 2012 with a symposium featuring Nobel laureate and former ICPSR Council member Elinor Ostrom and a celebratory banquet. (The symposium will be streamed live.) See the Web site for more 50th event information.

The ICPSR Summer Program has announced its 2012 four-week course session dates. Session I runs June 18 - July 13, 2012; and Session II runs July 16 - August 17, 2012. Stay tuned to the program Web site for additional courses offered in early June through August.
