ICPSR's 2010 Autumn Byte

Fall is wrapping up here in Ann Arbor, Michigan, but before you head
into winter hibernation, grab another glass of apple cider and take a
moment to enjoy ICPSR's fall edition of DataBytes!

Reflecting on the Fall Social Science Data Fair

Over 280 attendees from 136 institutions experienced ICPSR's first
virtual Social Sciences Data Fair. Of the 14 sessions, the webinar on
Data Management Plans was the most highly attended with 134 present.
Slides and recordings have all been posted on the ICPSR Data Fair Web
site.

Guiding Effective Data Management Plans

As more funding agencies, including NIH and most recently NSF, require
that grant applications contain data management plans for projects
involving data collection, ICPSR is pleased to offer guidelines on its
Web site for preparing data management plans.

Harvesting the Rewards of Work Well Done!

Congratulations to our ICPSR Undergraduate Research Paper Competition
winners (in order of placement): Evangeleen Pattison, The City College
of New York, "The Expansion of American Higher Education: Access and
Opportunity or Exclusion and Stratification?"; Matthew S. Michaels,
University of Florida, "Americans' Ever-Changing Attitudes toward
Homosexuality"; Evelyn Williams, Kent State University, "Satisfaction
of Needs and Well-Being: An Application of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs
to the Population of Kenya." The 2011 ICPSR Research Paper deadline is
January 31, 2011. Please encourage students to submit their papers now!

Planning for the 2011 ICPSR Internship Program

ICPSR is actively planning for another year of undergraduate interns.
Interns spend ten weeks from mid-June through mid-August at ICPSR
working with faculty mentors, completing research projects, attending
courses in the ICPSR Summer Program, creating conference-ready
posters, and more. Applications are due in February 2011. Check the
ICPSR Careers Web site frequently as more information becomes available.

Celebrating a Bounty of Preservation Pioneers

ICPSR's Preservation Officer, Nancy McGovern, former ICPSR director
Myron Gutmann, ICPSR Council member Fran Berman, and ICPSR faculty
associate Margaret Hedstrom have been named "Digital Preservation
Pioneers" by the Library of Congress. The Library is profiling
individuals and organizations for exemplary work in collecting and
preserving the nation's digital heritage.

Connecting the Community

ICPSR is pleased to announce the release of its 2009-2010 Annual
Report. This fully electronic report describes our continuing efforts
to connect the community, from meetings and educational workshops that
bring researchers from around the country to our Ann Arbor
headquarters, to new collections that widen the scope of data
available from ICPSR, to our renowned Summer Program in Quantitative
Methods.

Focusing on SDA - The Fall ICPSR Bulletin

In the Fall 2010 ICPSR Bulletin, ICPSR highlights the release of
version 3.5 of the Survey Documentation and Analysis software. SDA 3.5
provides online data analysis of datasets with complex sample designs
with the same level of statistical rigor as Stata, SAS, and SUDAAN.

Where Will You Be Next October?

Preparing to Give Thanks for 50 Years!

ICPSR will begin to take on a golden hue as it plans to celebrate its
50th Anniversary. The celebration will launch formally at the 2011 OR
