[ICPSR] Using Data in the Classroom: The American Community Survey

ICPSR partners with The Social Science Data Analysis Network (
www.ssdan.net) at the University of Michigan's Population Studies Center
on two NSF-funded projects relating to infusing quantitative literacy
across the social science curriculum.   The result of one collaboration
is TeachingWithData.org, a repository of resources for using data in
undergraduate classes (especially courses other than research methods
and statistics). 


As part of the second project, SSDAN is offering a workshop prior to the
American Sociological Association meetings to assist undergraduate
sociology instructors interested in using American Community Survey
(ACS) data.  The ACS-the replacement for the decennial census' "long
form"-provides annual releases of social, economic, and demographic data
suitable for such courses as Intro Sociology, Social Problems,
Stratification, Race Relations, Marriage and Family, Sociology of Aging,
and Population.  Sociologist-demographer William Frey of the Brookings
Institution and University of Michigan and other presenters will guide
participants through new classroom opportunities the ACS allows as well
as any potential obstacles.  SSDAN staff will also be on hand to help
participants develop an exercise for use in the classroom.  Attendees
will receive up to $500 to assist with lodging and other expenses.
