Workshop
Data Documentation Initiative (DDI) - Train the Trainers
Broadening Community Capacity and Adapting Training to Meet Institutional Needs
September 24-28, 2018, Schloss Dagstuhl - Leibniz Center for Informatics, Wadern, Germany
Course description
The Data Documentation Initiative (DDI) is an international standard for describing the data produced by surveys and other observational methods in the social, behavioral, economic, and health sciences. DDI can document and manage different stages in the research data lifecycle, such as conceptualization, collection, processing, distribution, discovery, and archiving.
The goal of this workshop is to build up more training capacity on DDI. The new trainers should then be able to teach specific tutorials for their institution or general purpose tutorials for a broader audience.
The participants will work mainly through existing training material with the instructors to build a modular training material body. This material will include slides, examples, and text. The work will be partially organized in working groups. By this approach, participants will get deeper knowledge on DDI and build collaboratively the modular training body.
The modular structure of the material should allow teaching of tutorials for various purposes (like data collection, archive, metadata-driven approach) or a combination of these. It should be also suitable for multiple audiences.
The content will cover DDI Codebook, DDI Lifecycle, and ideas of DDI 4 (in development). An approach across versions will be possible for some areas.
The modular structure of the material should allow reuse for different purposes, possibly also for self-teaching material and general documentation. The material will use a technical format which supports these ideas (like reStructuredText, used format of the DDI 4 documentation).
The training material will be provided with under the conditions of the Creative Commons Attribution license. The material can be then reused and changed in future by other instructors.
Target group
People who are interested in teaching a DDI tutorial and who are already familiar with DDI.
Prerequisites
People interested in participating in this workshop need to submit their application by July 22, 2018 by sending it to the following e-mail: workshop-mannheim at gesis.org.
The application should consist of a single PDF file including:
* A professional biosketch.
* A short motivation letter stating ...
* the current position and work,
* the reasons for the willingness to attend this workshop,
* the experiences with DDI, and
* the plans to teach a tutorial or organize a workshop on DDI in the next year.
Notifications about the selection results will be sent by July 30, 2018.
More Information
This workshop is supported by the DDI Alliance in two ways:
* The GESIS workshop participant's fee (350 Euro) is paid by the DDI Alliance if the participant plans to teach a tutorial or to organize a workshop on DDI in the year after the workshop. This can be an in-house course in the participant's institution or a public event.
* The DDI Alliance provides two travel grants in exceptional cases when no other funding options are available. Interested people should describe in the letter why the travel support is not possible by other means. Please add a rough quote for your estimated travel expenses to your application in this case.
Accommodation cost at Dagstuhl including full board is 70 Euro/night/person (this rate is subsidized by the Dagstuhl institute).
Please follow the link for useful information about the venue, accommodation, and more.
Please see for details the related GESIS workshop web page.

Dear DDI community,
I strongly encourage participation in the recently announced DDI Train the
Trainer workshop (see description below). Please consider attending
yourself, or recommending someone else. This is a great opportunity to
learn more about DDI, as well as spread the word about DDI through creating
training materials and teaching future workshops within your local
communities.
Instruction on how to apply are detailed below. Special thanks to GESIS -
Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences for hosting the workshop, and to
Jon Johnson, Wendy Thomas, Dan Smith, and Joachim Wackerow for organizing
and teaching.

Subject: [DDI-users] New DDI 3.3 specification available for public review
and comment
Message-ID:
The DDI Alliance (http://www.ddialliance.org/) is pleased to announce the
Public Review of DDI 3.3. This version of the DDI specification includes
important updates and new content, including:
- Classification management (based on GSIM/Neuchatel)
- Non-survey data collection (Measurements)
- Sampling
- Weighting
- Questionnaire Design
- Support for DDI as a Property Graph
- Quality Statement improvements (useful for Eurostat reporting)
Additionally, DDI 3.3 has a formal model now, so a detailed changelog can
be generated between DDI 3.2 and 3.3.
Links to the specification and instructions for comment are found at:

Lifecycle+3.3+Public+Review
We are eager to obtain feedback from the DDI and RDF communities on this
vocabulary. The comment period is open for six weeks until August 3, 2018,
and we hope to hear from you!
