Hi, Amber.

1. For variable data types, in DDI-C you can use the <var> attribute
"intrvl" to indicate whether the variable is discrete or continuous, the
<varFormat> attribute "type" to indicate whether your variable is character
or numeric, and the <varFormat> attribute "category" to describe the kind
of data represented, including date, time, currency, or "other". Other
useful <var> attributes are "wgt" to indicate whether the variable is a
weight, and "dcml" to indicate the number of decimal points on a variable.

2. For lists of recommended elements, please see the section "Recommended
elements sets" here: http://www.ddialliance.org/resources/ddi-profiles --
more specifically, the DDI-C Lite for DDI-C and the DDI-L 3.0 core for
DDI-L.

3.The DDI Alliance has published a number of controlled vocabularies to be
used with both flavors of DDI, more details about usage (including the
appropriate fields) in the specs for each vocabulary. A list of available
vocabularies, as well as documentation and links to downloads are available
here: http://www.ddialliance.org/controlled-vocabularies.

Thanks
Sanda.
