Dear Colleagues,

The Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR),
with funding from the World Bank and the National Science Foundation
(Meta-SSS project, SES-1229957), invites applications to participate in a
meeting to develop standards for documenting data transformations. The
meeting will take place on Monday and Tuesday, June 9-10, 2014, in Ann
Arbor, Michigan.

*Meeting Description*
The Data Documentation Initiative (DDI) has established an international
standard for XML documentation of social science microdata. However,
development of tools for documenting the data production process has been
hindered by the lack of standards for recording how variables are created,
recoded, and transformed. The creation of community standards for
describing variable transformations in DDI is a prerequisite for the
development of new software and workflows to expedite the capture of
provenance metadata throughout the data lifecycle.

Meeting participants will reach agreement on how to represent the most
common types of operations performed on quantitative data (compute,
generate, recode, replace, etc.) in DDI. DDI schema fragments will be
developed to hold this new content. Additions to the DDI specification will
be proposed for official adoption by the DDI Alliance.

*Participants*

Attendance will be limited to individuals with expertise in DDI, metadata,
provenance, software development, and other relevant areas.

*Applications*

Invitations to the meeting will be issued on a competitive basis.
Prospective attendees should send a letter of interest describing their
expertise, experience, and potential contributions to the meeting.
Preference will be given to people with previous experience with DDI or
similar standards.

*Travel Expenses*

Funds are available to cover travel expenses (airfare, ground
transportation, lodging) for approximately 10-12 individuals. Please
include a request for travel funding in your letter of interest.

*Application Procedure*

Letters of interest should be sent to:

Mary Vardigan
Executive Director, DDI Alliance

Letters of interest must be received by April 4, 2014. Acceptances will be
sent out by April 11, 2014.
