Dear DDI Community,

The current draft version (0.4) of the Generic Statistical Information Model (GSIM) is released for review. The deadline for comments on GSIM V0.4 is 15 June 2012. Please see below regarding the link to the documents and the details of the review process.

Background
The recently released strategic vision document<http://www.unece.org/stats/documents/ece/ces/2011/1.e.pdf> from HLG-BAS<http://www1.unece.org/stat/platform/display/hlgbas/High-Level+Group+for+Strategic+Developments+in+Business+Architecture+in+Statistics+%28HLG-BAS%29> (High Level Group for Strategic Directions in Business Architecture in Statistics) discusses the role of GSIM and GSBPM<http://www1.unece.org/stat/platform/display/metis/The+Generic+Statistical+Business+Process+Model> (Generic Statistical Business Process Model) in supporting the "industrialisation" of statistics. In simple terms GSIM can be envisaged as providing a basis for statistical organisations to agree on common terminology and definitions to aid their discussion on developing metadata systems and information management frameworks.

What is GSIM?

- The Generic Statistical Information Model (GSIM) is a reference framework of information objects, which enables generic descriptions of the definition, management, and use of data and metadata throughout the statistical production process.

- The Generic Statistical Information Model is an internationally agreed set of definitions, attributes and relationships that describe the pieces of information that are used in the production of official statistics.

- GSIM provides a common language to describe information that supports the statistical production process from the identification of user needs through to the dissemination of statistical products.

- GSIM is aligned with relevant standards, such as DDI and SDMX, but it is not directly tied to them, neither to specific technologies nor other concrete implementation details. GSIM provides common semantics that can be used unambiguously across and between different implementations.

I see an important bidirectional relationship between GSIM and DDI Lifecycle. DDI Lifecycle had influence on parts of GSIM. Ideas of the GSIM model could be used for future versions of DDI.
