Thank you all for replying!  The answers I received were exactly what I was looking for.  In the end, I can see that it will depend on several factors: 

1 - how the database has been setup
2 - the mapping of database contents to DDI tags
3 - resources available at the institution

Thank you also for pointing out that there are always several ways to accomplishing this task!
