[DDI-users] Automatic generation of variable-level metadata fromSAS/SPSS files

Thank you all for your responses.  Here is a quick summary for those who
may be interested:

1) Nesstar (not automatic, but scripts are being developed locally)
2) SDA (translates both SAS and SPSS)
3) ODS XML engine in SAS (in development)

I will be looking at all the resources provided. I am considering a
project for my masters in public health which can easily convert PH data
sets and archive them in a digital library portal.

Has there been any attempt to process data directly from SAS or SPSS
files into variable-level metadata? Is this just not feasible? Or has
