Has there been any thought about adding more salient attributes for these things? Something more along the lines of METS file tag. http://dlib.nyu.edu/tamwag/beame.mp3 We need to store more info for things like mimetype and fileName hints. While there is a tag for fileDscr's, its definition is vague and simply suggests some "title" for the file. Also there is nothing similar in nature for otherMats, fields like labl and notes are somewhat too vague and too generalized. Are there any thoughts on this? thanks, Mark From ddi-users@icpsr.umich.edu Fri Mar 14 06:01:11 2003 From: ddi-users@icpsr.umich.edu (ddi-users@icpsr.umich.edu) Date: Fri, 14 Mar 2003 01:01:11 -0500 Subject: [DDI-users] Pascal Heus/Person/World Bank is out of the office. I hope that colleagues will be interested in the news of our latest release of the Nesstar software built around the DDI. In many ways the DDI and Nesstar have had a very close relationship for many years and we would be very pleased if anyone wanted to try out this latest Nesstar software.

By way of reminder, the Nesstar software suite version 2.0 (server/light/publisher) has many new features and is designed to be a highly customisable and scalable technological platform for the preparation, publication and remote access to aggregated tables and micro-data. Nesstar provides extensions to standard Web technologies that allow an organisation to build dynamic and interactive Web sites powered by advanced data services. It is particularly suited to anyone wishing to disseminate survey data or results and is based upon the DDI (www.icpsr.umi= ch.edu/DDI) . More details can be found at www.nesstar.com .

Nesstar tools include:
=B7       Nesstar Server - a specialised data server providing standard web= services (hence supporting a distributed environment) as well as advanced= data services. The Nesstar server includes an SQL-based metadata management= system, a data storage system, a powerful statistical engine as well as= flexible access control.
=B7       Nesstar Light (Web Engine) - an additional layer that allows an end= user to access Nesstar services through a standard Web browser. This is= totally customisable and configurable and is the interface that presents= the search, browse, display, analysis and retrieval options to the user.=
=B7       Nesstar Publisher - a sophisticated data conversion and preparation= tool that can rapidly publish data from a variety of sources (including= SPSS, SAS, Excel etc.). The tool includes a specialised metadata editor,= data and metadata validation routines and metadata templates that provide= standardisation and control. For anyone managing and publishing survey= data, this tool must be seen!

In preparation (and due Q2 2003) are:
=B7       Nesstar Explorer  - version 2 of the specialist web browser= that contains all the cubes functionality as well as advanced searching and= display options. It is the tool for the professional data user.
=B7       Nesstar Cubes - a new data manipulation display that enables the= user to drill up and down and =91slice and dice=92 multi-dimensional cubes= using drag and drop. It also enables multi-views of data (time series,= graph and map) and is directly linked into the DDI standards environment= for which Nesstar software is well known.

Training: If you are interesting in training on the new version of Nesstar,= then we have already scheduled 2 day training sessions at Colchester on the= 8th and 9th of May and 3rd and 4th July. This will take participants= through the whole process from setting up a Nesstar server to preparing a= dataset for publishing.

If you would like to try out the new version, please email nesstar-support@nesstar.com, for a 90 day= trial. This will come with up to one days free technical support. If you do= decide to use Nesstar software for your organisation, we have a number of= different support packages that we can discuss to meet your needs. Nesstar= is owned by the University of Essex and the Norwegian Social Science Data= Service (NSD) and is pleased to provide this at zero license for academic= institutions. However neither the Data Archive at Essex or NSD are able to= provide support directly.

With best wishes

Don't forget that as a CESSDA member you do=20 get direct support anyway and should email nesstar-support@nesstar. In=20 terms of the specifics 1. Yes you de need a good server, but it runs sweetly on my laptop, albeit= =20 a powerful one. 512 Mb Ram, 1.7Mhz processor. We we will look at this configuration issue, glad it gets there in the end. 2. Object browser is for the programmers like yourself, we would not expect= =20 most users to use this tool. However we will process this bug that you have= =20 hit immediately. German should be okay, as we handle many languages. We=20 will get back to you on this. 3. Not sure about this one, we will check. 4. Again we will check into this. Thanks for the feedback, it is really appreciated and helps to tune the=20 product. We we will look at this configuration issue, glad it gets there in the end.

Dear Nesstar developers, dear all,

Thank you, Simon, for your information, and thanks to all developers for this new version v.212 of Nesstar server. Curious, as I am, I purged all old Nesstar stuff, and installed the new version on an old server with a new W2K.

0. Preliminary remark
---------------------
I'd really add good news to this list, because Nesstar has many nice features now, and a well designed light client. On the other side, why tell how wonderful it is, if I have troubles? And maybe, the following are peanuts for you. Let's see:

1. Installation:
----------------
- I need a new server! Be warned - this version needs 500-1000MB RAM. See instructions. My old 2-processor-200-mhz-256mb-ram-machine with fast disks, running ~ fine with previous Nesstar, is hopelessly overcharged and too weak.

- not really clear at what point installation finishes. The config window does not work as expected: it does not close at the end, shows an error registering/starting the service, a later 'apply' denies access to nesstar service [is already running]. But at the end, everything's going fine.

2. Add my first dataset (without data)
-----------------------
I use the object browser, reachable by 'Browse objects' in main page. After some problems with the DTD's base address, my XML imported successfully.

Then I accessed the dataset by the light client. It displays fine until the first high bit german character should appear. Garbage from this position. See attachment. My XML contains: encoding=3D"ISO-8859-1", no conversion of umlaute etc.

After browsing the dataset, it disappeared definitely from the list, the SIDOS Nesstar server seem to be empty. So I added it again. The program refused it. I called the 'DeleteAllDatasets' method. Try to add again. Nesstar server refuses, with the following msg:

-----
The server encountered an internal error (<error>[DBConnection][add] Error inserting '305_F1993' into 'DatafileEJB': java.sql.SQLException: Invalid argument value: Duplicate entry '305_F1993' for key 1</error>) that prevented it from fulfilling this request.
----

It appears DeleteAllDatasets does not work.

3. Browse objects from another machine
--------------------------------------
I tried to access the server objects from another machine. It doesn't work. Clicking any button in the contents frame shows me the famous M$ dialog: "Some files can harm your computer..." open/save/cancel, instead of EXECUTING the command.

Subject: [DDI-users] Nesstar Software

Dear colleagues (please pardon multiple posting)

I hope that colleagues will be interested in the news of our latest release= of the Nesstar software built around the DDI. In many ways the DDI and= Nesstar have had a very close relationship for many years and we would be= very pleased if anyone wanted to try out this latest Nesstar software.=

By way of reminder, the Nesstar software suite version 2.0= (server/light/publisher) has many new features and is designed to be a= highly customisable and scalable technological platform for the= preparation, publication and remote access to aggregated tables and= micro-data. Nesstar provides extensions to standard Web technologies that= allow an organisation to build dynamic and interactive Web sites powered by= advanced data services. It is particularly suited to anyone wishing to= disseminate survey data or results and is based upon the DDI (www.icpsr.umich.edu/DDI) . More details can be found= at www.nesstar.com .

Simon

Subject:=20 [DDI-users] Nesstar Software

Dear colleagues (please pardon = multiple=20 posting)

I hope that colleagues will be interested in the = news of our=20 latest release of the Nesstar software built around the DDI. In many = ways=20 the DDI and Nesstar have had a very close relationship for many = years and we=20 would be very pleased if anyone wanted to try out this latest = Nesstar=20 software.

By way of reminder, the Nesstar software suite = version 2.0=20 (server/light/publisher) has many new features and is designed to be = a=20 highly customisable and scalable technological platform for the = preparation,=20 publication and remote access to aggregated tables and micro-data. = Nesstar=20 provides extensions to standard Web technologies that allow an = organisation=20 to build dynamic and interactive Web sites powered by advanced data=20 services. It is particularly suited to anyone wishing to disseminate = survey=20 data or results and is based upon the DDI (www.icpsr.umich.edu/DDI) . More details can = be found at=20 www.nesstar.com=20 .

Nesstar tools include:
=B7       Nesstar=20 Server - a specialised data server providing standard web services = (hence=20 supporting a distributed environment) as well as advanced data = services. The=20 Nesstar server includes an SQL-based metadata management system, a = data=20 storage system, a powerful statistical engine as well as flexible = access=20 control.
=B7       Nesstar=20 Light (Web Engine) - an additional layer that allows an end user to = access=20 Nesstar services through a standard Web browser. This is totally=20 customisable and configurable and is the interface that presents the = search,=20 browse, display, analysis and retrieval options to the user. =
=B7       Nesstar=20 Publisher - a sophisticated data conversion and preparation tool = that can=20 rapidly publish data from a variety of sources (including SPSS, SAS, = Excel=20 etc.). The tool includes a specialised metadata editor, data and = metadata=20 validation routines and metadata templates that provide = standardisation and=20 control. For anyone managing and publishing survey data, this tool = must be=20 seen!

In preparation (and due Q2 2003) are:
=B7       Nesstar=20 Explorer  - version 2 of the specialist web browser that = contains all=20 the cubes functionality as well as advanced searching and display = options.=20 It is the tool for the professional data user.
=B7       Nesstar=20 Cubes - a new data manipulation display that enables the user to = drill up=20 and down and =91slice and dice=92 multi-dimensional cubes using drag = and drop.=20 It also enables multi-views of data (time series, graph and map) and = is=20 directly linked into the DDI standards environment for which Nesstar = software is well known.

Training: If you are interesting in = training=20 on the new version of Nesstar, then we have already scheduled 2 day = training=20 sessions at Colchester on the 8th and 9th of May and 3rd and 4th = July. This=20 will take participants through the whole process from setting up a = Nesstar=20 server to preparing a dataset for publishing.

If you would = like to=20 try out the new version, please email nesstar-support@nesstar.com, for a 90 = day trial.=20 This will come with up to one days free technical support. If you do = decide=20 to use Nesstar software for your organisation, we have a number of = different=20 support packages that we can discuss to meet your needs. Nesstar is = owned by=20 the University of Essex and the Norwegian Social Science Data = Service (NSD)=20 and is pleased to provide this at zero license for academic = institutions.=20 However neither the Data Archive at Essex or NSD are able to provide = support=20 directly.

With best wishes

Simon

Dear members:

I am in the process of getting the codebook together for a project I am working on using DDI.  However, I do not know where to start from.  The DDI website has tons of information, however, I am looking for step-to-step guidance, examples of codebooks done by other members of the list, etc.  I would greatly appreciate suggestions from anyone who has gone through a similar dilemma.

Study the examples on the DDI web site. They are very helpful, and it's really worth spending some time with them. 2. Look at the existing codebooks for the data you'll be marking up, if you have them. Otherwise, final reports or publications based on the data will often contain the information you need. I find it helpful to highlight important information as I find it. 3. Go through the DDI tag library in detail. Decide which tags you need for your data. Some tags will contain fixed data (e.g. "Copyright University of Georgia"). Some will be required -- you always want something in that field. And some will be optional -- you might or might not want to record something. Think about what makes sense for you and your users. The DDI markup is very complex and sophisticated, but you don't have to use every single tag on every data set. 4. Make a template, cross-referenced to the tag list, for your project. (I would be happy to share my template, off the list, as an example.) 5. Mark up some codebooks. Think about it. Change your mind (several times) about how to handle ambiguous situations. 6. Run whatever tool you plan to use to transform the XML into something readable. This will inevitably reveal things you will need to change in the XML. 7. Post questions to this list. It's a small community, and I've found people to be very helpful. I also hoped for step-by-step instructions, with lots of examples, when I started. I think it would help all of us if there were more examples from different sources, possibly with some annotations, on the DDI web site -- but you too will figure it out.
